Class 3-206 is working on our new unit – Animal Adaptations. We are looking at the physical features of animals and what make them equip to survive, as well as, how their behavior allow them to adapt to their environment. One favorite animal is a unique lizard called a “gecko.” We are learning some fascinating facts on their adaptation. Students also choose another animal to research. Let’s listen to the voices of 3-206!
Answer the following questions.
l. What is animal adaptation?
2. Why is the gecko such an amazing animal? Explain how its physical features enable it to adapt to its environment.
3. Does the gecko exhibit any specific behaviors that help it to survive?
4. Name the animal you researched. What special features allow this animal to find food, move around, hunt, escape from enemies etc.?
5. Is there a connection between adaptation and extinction ?
6. Suppose a baby polar bear was brought from Alaska and placed with a panda bear on the foothills of China? Would this baby polar bear survive? Explain why or why not?

1. Animal adaptations are features an animal has to help them adjust to their environment.
2. Geckos are amazing creatures because they have many ways to adapt to their enviornment by camouflauging with its surroundings. It prevents it from getting eaten by predators.
3. The geckos have webbed feet which help them to climb trees to make a fast getaway from the predator.
4. I researched the sea turtle. The special features that help them survive is their shell so when they see danger, they go into their shell. The feature that helps them move around are their 2 fins in front which help them swim and 2 hind legs which help them walk on land.
5. There is no connection between adpatation and extinition because adaptations are features that help the animals adjust to their enviornment and extinction is no exsiting anymore like dinosaurs.
6. If this baby polar bear was put among a panda in China, the baby polar bear will NOT survive because the baby polar bear’s adaptations will be different considering that the food will be different. Panda bears eat bamboo whiles polar bears eat fish and seals. Also the climate would be different because the foothill of a mountain is the bottom of a hill at a warm climate and polar bears are adapted to cold climates.

4.I researched a penguin.They dive into the ocean and they swim into the ocean and they swim until they find fish.It escapes from it’s enemies by using it’s flippers to swim away from predators.
5.A penguin is not endangered or extinct there is still a large amount of penguins living in the wild.
6.If a polar bear in Alaska was placed with a panda bear in China the polar bear will not survive because a polar bear has lots of fur to survive in the cold but China has a warm climate and a polar bear eats fish and it is going to be difficult for a polar bear find fish.

3.The name of the animal I researched is called a Squirrel Monkey.They use their tails to grab food.Squirrel Monkeys use their skinny thighs to jump.
4.Squirrel Monkeys are endangered.There are about 32,000 on earth their homes get cut down.
5.The connection between adaptation and extinction is that is that when an animal can’t adopt to it’s environment it will become extinct.
6.If a baby polar bear was brought from Alaska and place with a panda bear in China’s foothills, they would not survive because they can’t adopt to their environment.The weather is too hot for a polar bear and Alaska is too cold for a panda bear.

Animal adaptation is when an animal has a special feature that helps it survive in it’s environment.
A gecko is such an amazing animal because it has a fake tail. It’s fake tail help it because if a predator spots it like, a rattlesnake bits it’s tail it will fall off. Then the gecko leaves it’s tail behind and run away . Later on, the gecko’s tail will grow back on.
Yes, a gecko uses it’s voice to warn animals. Sometimes it hisses,croaks, squeaks or barks.
I researched the crocodile. The features that help the crocodile find food are it’s nose,eyes,and ears. First it waits for it’s prey. Then it attacks. The crocodile escapes from it’s enemies by roaring,and opening it’s jaws to show the predator it’s teeth.
Yes, three species of crocodiles are endangered two thirds have recovered. But some are still endangered. Pollution threatens many of their water ways. Human population growth is destroying their wetland habitats. Illegal hunting is also still a problem.
No, the polar bear would not survive because, the polar bear has blubber or fat and it needs that to live in a cold environment not a hot environment.

3.A gecko can hiss,and bark so it can warn enemies and to speak to other geckos. Geckos can camouflage with the tree bark to hide from its predator.
4. The animal I researched is a tiger. A tiger can sense their prey with their whiskers. A tiger also has a great sense of smell to find its prey.

5.This animal is not close to extinction there is still a high population of this animal.

4 My animal’s called a chimpanzee. The special feature that the chimpanzee has is it’s senses,hearing,sight,smell,taste, and touch is similar to ours.Another one is they are very smart.They also build their own nests and tools.
5 Extinction and adaptation is not the same because extinction means no more and adaptation means the way the animal adapts to it’s environment.
